Medication Management in Rural Primary Care: The Role of AI-Based Decision Support with ChatGPT

Nurmuhammed Arynov, Markus Herrmann, Martin Berwig

Keywords: medication management, polypharmacy, aritifical intelligence, primary care

Justification:

Polypharmacy is a growing challenge in primary care, where GPs often manage multimorbid patients with complex medication regimens with limited specialist support. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers potential solutions by supporting medication reviews, identifying potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) and optimizing medication prescribing. This workshop aims to explore the feasibility, potential benefits and challenges of integrating AI-based decision support into rural primary care and promote interactive discussion among practitioners and researchers.

Objective:

- to introduce participants to the application of AI-based language models in the context of polypharmacy.
- to explore practical, ethical, and implementation-related challenges of AI in rural primary care.
- to encourage critical discussion on how such tools can be responsibly integrated into clinical workflows in rural primary care.
- to identify possible barriers and facilitators for AI implementation in rural healthcare settings.

Organisation:

The workshop will include a short evidence-based presentation, live demonstration using anonymized case vignettes, and facilitated breakout sessions. Participants will engage in vignette-based patient case simulations and use ChatGPT to analyze complex medication plans and make informed prescribing decisions. Furthermore, in a group discussion participants will share insights on potential clinical applicability, barriers and limitations as well as ethical concerns regarding such medication management approach.

Participation:

The session will include general practitioners, healthcare professionals, researchers, educators, and decision-makers. No prior experience with AI tools is required. Active participation is encouraged through interactive case analysis and moderated group discussion.

Expected outcomes:

Identifying probabale challenges and potential strategies for an adoption of AI-assisted medication management in primary care. Participants will gain and expand their understanding of medication management using AI tool and algorithms. They will leave with practical insights into how ChatGPT can support clinical decision-making, and be able to assess its role in future healthcare provision models.
